    Sports addicts can embrace cycling’s Tour de France and the First Ashes Test match between England and Australia on SBS this fortnight. But there are pearls for non-sports fans as well.

    FRIDAY JULY 3

    1929: the Wall Street Crash documents six catastrophic days on New York’s Wall Street which led to the world’s greatest economic collapse. SBS1 at 8.30pm. A new series of Lynda la Plante’s Trial and Retribution begins on ABC1 at 8.30pm.


    SATURDAY JULY 4

    The New Tricks team investigates a magic act that ended in murder, on ABC1 at 7.30pm.

    SUNDAY JULY 5

    The Great Tide off South Africa’s east coast is the subject of Nature’s Great Events, on ABC1 at 7.30pm. On ABC1 at 8.30pm, a young couple chase after a murderer, oblivious to the danger, in Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple.

    MONDAY JULY 6

    SBS1 begins more unseen-in-Australia episodes of the UK version of Top Gear, at 7.30pm. Jeremy gets creative with a Toyota Hilux. MI5 confronts Russia over its flirtations with Al Qaeda in Spooks, ABC1 at 9.35pm.

    TUESDAY JULY 7

    Can GM Food Save the World?, SBS1 at 7.30pm. Grand Designs, ABC1 at 8.30pm, follows a young architect and his wife building a house that seemingly defies gravity. On SBS1 at 8.30pm, Age of Terror looks at the hijacking of an Air France jet, which the hijackers planned to fly into the Eiffel Tower.

    WEDNESDAY JULY 8

    SBS1 begins its Ashes Cricket coverage with the First Test from Cardiff at 7pm.

    THURSDAY JULY 9

    Time Team’s Tony Robinson joins an Aussie dig at the exact scene of Ned Kelly’s final shoot-out in Ned Kelly Uncovered, ABC1 at 8.30pm. At 9.30pm on ABC1, Spirit Stones tells the story of a stream of rock falls in south-western WA in the 1940s and 50s.

    FRIDAY JULY 10

    Trial and Retribution, ABC1 at 8.30pm, is about a tight-knit medical team which closes ranks when their star surgeon is murdered.

    SATURDAY JULY 11

    A latter-day hippie commune holds the key to a university student’s death in New Tricks, ABC1 at 7.30pm.

    SUNDAY JULY 12

    A woman with many ex-husbands seems to be in danger, or is she? The final in this series of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple, ABC1 at 8.30pm. Watch for a histrionic Joan Collins.

    MONDAY JULY 13

    Olivia Newton-John appears on Talking Heads, ABC1 at 6.30pm. The indestructible Hilux from last week's show continues to survive in Top Gear, SBS1 at 7.30pm. Ruthless forces attempt to bring down the UK economy in Spooks, ABC1 at 9.35pm. Cast out by Debbie, Frank seeks shelter in a confessional booth where he overhears a neighbour's shocking confession, in Shameless, SBS1 at 10pm. A second and final ep. for this series follows at 10.55pm.

    TUESDAY JULY 14

    At 8.30pm on ABC1, a UK couple have Grand Designs for a house built of recycled materials in Brittany in France. A second series of Tracey Ullman’s State of the Union begins on ABC1 at 9.25pm.

    THURSDAY JULY 16

    All you’ll ever need to know about the Moon is on Catalyst, ABC1 at 8pm. It’s 40 years ago today since Apollo Eleven blasted off on its mission to the Moon.
