Usually, this column accommodates programs only on the five main channels. But this fortnight, the focus is on ABC2’s Beautiful People a six-part BBC comedy based on the madly successful childhood memoirs by Simon Doonan, now the creative director of Barney’s the conservative-chic New York men’s store. A dysfunctional but hugely supportive family lives in mundane Reading, where Simon (Luke Ward-Wilkinson) only has to open the fridge door to become a Broadway musical star. Delicious, original and heart-warming, there is no angst here about being gay – only a positive message about living, loving, having dreams, and being yourself. Find someone with a black box on their TV, and elbow your way in. You simply can’t miss this. ABC2, Thursday, June 25, 9.25pm.
