When I decided to do another competition at Garage Bar, I thought it was about time we had a Miss Drag S.A.I had tons of interest from the young queens around town and actually got very excited with the prospect of 12 contestants and a three week running comp. Before the comp even started there was evil lurking around the corner. One contestant had dinner the night before heat one at another contestant’s house and within hours of getting home came down with food poisoning. Another entrant, who had a few others over for lunch to discuss song choices ended up frockless when she discovered her self-made evening gown gone. On week one there were some clear favourites with the audience and judges but nothing prepared me for the bitching among contestants. Several of them actually texted the judges during the show with nasty messages and comments about the judges point of view on certain performances. There were tears and tantrums from some young divas and full on bitching over who did one’s own makeup, hair and costume and who went to the expense of having it all done for them. Week two saw some faves now not as favoured and two contestants pulled out with pretty piss weak excuses (such as hair and shoes not arriving in the mail in time - haven’t you heard of Express Post?) Friends offered to help for a small fee to cover makeup but seems this young upstart was looking for freebies. She’d burnt friends in the past by not returning and losing loaned items so no one was prepared to help out this time. With a $400 cash prize, as well as a trophy sash and crown, I would think these kids would have been a little more prepared. As far as doing one’s own makeup and hair - I think that’s terrific BUT if you think someone else can make you look better and you are prepared to go to the expense then, why not? Do you think that in real comps the girls do their own makeup and hair and make their own outfits - "I DONT THINK SO!" So girls, it’s all about just having fun. No one is above anybody else and you are all in the same boat and all have the ability to win. Oh and thanks for the bitchy entertainment, it will certainly make me think twice about running another competition. Hugs and Kisses Vonni
