Sen. Sarah Hanson-Young SA Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has called on the opposition to support a bill which allows same-sex couples to access the federal Family Court.
The Family Law Amendment (Financial Matters and Other Measures) Bill comes before the Senate today (Thurs Sept 25).
“The quickest and easiest thing for the Coalition to do today is to vote for this Bill, allowing it to go through, and therefore pave the way for same-sex couples to be recognised in federal law,” said Hanson-Young.
She said the Greens had welcomed Malcolm Turnbull as the new Liberal Party leader because of his commitment to equality for LGBT Australians, but it was disappointing he was not in his chamber for yesterday’s debate of the Same-Sex Omnibus Bill
“This is a perfect opportunity for him to demonstrate strong leadership, and make his position known on whether or not he supports this package of reforms,” Hanson-Young said.
