Speaker Margaret Wilson told the Dominion Post that the naming of the Rainbow Room had been supported by members of all parties.
She said some of the parliament’s most important work went on in the committee rooms.
"It is appropriate that it is with select committee rooms we recognise all members of our society and the paths they have taken to full citizenship with equal rights," Wilson said.
Other committee rooms have similar designations such as the Maori Affairs Room, Suffrage Room, Pacific Room and Asia Room.
"All of these rooms tell the story of honest and full representation in the New Zealand Parliament," Wilson said.
