"Yes, we have four children and we're trying to find the right time," Etheridge, 47, told US celebrity TV show, Extra.
The Oscar and Grammy award-winner has already exchanged vows with Michaels, 33, in a commitment ceremony in 2003.
However, since the California High Court struck down the state’s same-sex marriage ban in May, many gay and lesbian couples have gone further and sought to wed.
Other celebrities to marry their same-sex partners include Ellen Degeneres and original Star Trek actor George Takei.
If Etheridge is to tie the knot in California she may need to move quickly.
Californians will vote in early November on a new measure, known as Proposition 8, which would once again “eliminate right of same-sex couples to marry”.
Etheridge has two children from her previous relationship with Julie Cypher, a daughter, Bailey Jean, and son, Beckett, both born in the late 1990s.
And in October 2006, Michaels gave birth to twins, a son, Miller Steven, and a daughter, Johnnie Rose.
