The West Australian newspaper reported that Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi opened the Perth Pride Festival with the words “Gay, straight, who cares?”
Scaffidi believes Perth has the climate and lifestyle to attract LGBT people.
She told the West Australian that people should “be so over” sexuality issues.
“I still get letters in this position from people saying, ‘How dare you support the gay parade’,” she said.
“I write back to all of them and say this is the 21st century and it’s all about diversity, acceptance, tolerance, all of those things. Some of the letters you get are quite staggering.”
