Good on Ian Hunter for standing up for his rights (blaze #215). I congratulate his courage and conviction and totally agree with him. Far too often we see straights abusing the so-called sanctity of marriage – just look at the likes of Britney Spears and her day long marriage a while back. If you love someone so much and you’re in it for the long haul, why can’t you put up your hand for marriage? I know if I was lucky enough to be in a relationship such as Mr Hunter must enjoy, I could think of nothing better than celebrating the fact before family and friends and the law. I was pleasantly surprised by the recent polling in Adelaide where, last time I looked, the poll showed 55% of respondents in favour of not limiting marriage to straight couples. I’m sure many of those participating in the poll were straight and all in favour of marriage equality for all. Our Prime Minister Rudd should realise that just because he believes something on a religious level that it is not OK to inflict that belief on all Australians, especially when a recent national poll indicated that 60% of Australians were in favour of same sex marriages. We should not have to accept ‘second best’ with civil recognition. If it’s good enough for straights – it’s good enough for me. Equal rights for all. Leah R Unley
