To start our column on Gay Spirituality we would like to offer the following insights into the writer and previous editor of White Crane Journal Toby Johnson that we have gained so much wisdom from. Exploring gay spirituality Toby says in his book Gay Perspectiveʼ The aim of so-called “gay spirituality,” then, is to derive a sense of the meaning of life, a motive for good behavior and an explanation for our place in the universe that flows directly from and is consistent with our homosexual experience. So then is gay spirituality different from so called straight sexuality? Well no because spirituality is an inner path, a unique path to you, everyone connects to the supernatural by their own means. We propose like many visionaries i.e. Toby Johnson, Mark Thompson & Harry Hay, that gay gpirituality is a very important creation in defining our spiritual purpose on this earth and our interconnection to the Universe. Therefore in order to define gay spirituality we need to explore not old dogmatic beliefs of dead religion but a ʻnew mythʼ – that is not a literal myth of illusion, rather new attributes, archetypes and symbols expressing a transcendent language can be used to manifest the qualities of our unique gift of being gay in this physical incarnation. This new myth that we have been exploring on gsspirit.com and in our personal life helps one to understand the make up of the Gay Soul – Toby Johnson once again offers these seven attributes for this new myth that are as follows: 1) Experience from an outside perspective, 2) nondualistic, 3) incarnational (sex-positive and not other-worldly), 4) evolutionary (and, therefore, challenging to the status quo of traditional religion), 5) insight-provoking, 6) transformational, and 7) adaptively virtuous. Through these we can then revel in uniqueness creating ecstasy and realise the oneness beyond the polarities. These attributes need to be expounded and it is up to us to develop this in this new myth. One great revelation we have found in gay spirituality is that it is concerned with sex, as a sex positive lifestyle. Through this exploration one can find a new way of relating to their gay physical incarnation. Gay spirituality invites the individual to discover the greater meaning to life. It is important to look at our uniqueness of being Gay and how we can use these qualities to live with ourselves and offer new insights to the greater human existence here on Mother Earth.
