Darren and Bradley of www.gsspirit.com exploring Gay Spirituality.
Material Culture is gripping the free spirit of the gay world. Adverts promoting a consumer fantasy of liquid love and online life from alcohol to fancy gadgets, according to the electronic media are the ultimate fulfilment of happiness. Are we going to keep preoccupying ourselves with the external world of image and success and measure who we are according to the caste system of society, are we only become more twisted in the lunacy of the world and its ideals? Or do we always try to act out roles because we are told this is how we must play the game? Str8 acting trying to fit into a hetero mindset world that sees only in the sense of a dualistic "us versus them" mentality. The consumer self grasps for pleasure through external attachments that according to Buddhism only bring pain and suffering and it is this attachment which brings death to the psyche. Gay Consciousness is more than the gilt and glam of the electronic flux of the mass media. Nothing external can define who we are and allow us to experience ultimate happiness. Internal fulfilment comes from knowing that our Gay Soul is something that has unique qualities that only through inner self-discovery can blossom. We need a new vision that is not the latest gadget or liquid spirit, but one which is the realisation that Gay Consciousness can offer new perspectives on life. Through this we can express our psyche in the philosophical concept of non-dualism, knowing that we have the unique angle in seeing and feeling attracted to the reflection of our sexuality. Instead of the many versus the one, we are the many and the one. We can therefore develop a positive outlook, knowing we can look back at society from outside the box, just like the astronauts looked back at the earth and beheld the beauty and magic of this world we live in; an outsider perspective. We can develop new rules and new myths. As the old rules and myths of a hetero-based society don’t work for us, we have the unique advantage of forming our own myths and expressions of the divine. First a sex-positive attitude transforms sexual culture; erotica is like a meditation focus, concentrating the mind on the single point of awareness of incarnation. Rather than dull the pain, we can realise love shared and beauty can augment our inner experience where the inner and outer become a true balance. We get caught in webs of karma wanting attention from some men but not from others, giving attention to some but not others. If we all want to get picked up by someone more attractive than ourselves, no one will never connect. We get rejected by the men we want because we reject the men who want us. - Toby Johnson (2). We gay men are at a key time in the evolution of our gay consciousness. We’ve been struggling to reach a great vision buried in us, which we first sensed only in the vaguest ways. We have all felt this vision, lying inside, watching, showing itself in dreams, directing our acts and beliefs in unseen ways. In the modern gay liberation movement, the history of men’s strugggles has been the history of groping toward our vision, sensing it in the values of androgyny, in revolution, in free sexuality. It has led us to Stonewall, to genderfuck, to the birth of a new gay culture. - Mitch Walker (1).
