Local writer and transwoman warrior Teri Louise Kelly has released her first volume of poetry: Girls like me.Following on from her two volumes of memoirs, Sex, Knives & Bouillabaisse and Last Bed on Earth, this volume of poetry follows a similarly autobiographical vein. Iconoclastic almost to a fault, she uses concise and at times fractured language to evoke vivid images and lampoon the cynical fucked-up World According to Kelly. Featuring titles such as ‘Penile Penal Colony’ (a paean to sperm banks) ‘Ode to Luiz #2’ (a brutal recollection of life as a borstal boy) and ‘The House’ (a gentle, wry reflection on Kelly’s grandfather) Girls like me is intense, vibrant, violent and often wickedly funny. Chalk up another winner.
